Choosing Which Skellig Tour To Book

There is an abundance of things to see and do when you visit Ireland, and experiencing the Skellig Islands is one of them. Skellig Michael and Little Skellig are two small, steep and rocky islands that are popular destinations to visit amongst both locals and tourists.

There are different Skellig tours available to book at Skellig Coast Adventures which enable you to be immersed in the fascinating history of the Skellig Coast and see the incredible wildlife that calls these islands home. Not every boat tour will be suitable for all visitors though and there are a few things to consider when you’re choosing which way you’re going to visit Skellig Michael and Little Skellig. Below we have put together a list of things you should think about when you’re choosing which Skellig tour to book.

How much time you have for a boat tour

If you’re trying to squeeze as much as possible into your trip to Ireland, the Skellig eco tour will likely be more suitable for you. This tour lasts approximately 2.5 hours, so you will be able to do other things on the same day. However, the Skellig landing tour takes approximately 5 hours, but it does start early in the morning so you will have the evening to visit other places.

What your current fitness levels are

The eco tour is ideal for families and it’s an accessible option for anyone less able. Whereas, the landing tour requires a fair level of fitness. Part of the landing tour involves climbing the 640 steps to the top of Skellig Michael and you will need good walking shoes as the ground underfoot can be quite uneven. Generally speaking, if you want more of a relaxing Skellig tour, then the eco tour will be a better choice for you.

Who you’re visiting the Skellig Islands with

For safety reasons, children under the age of 10 aren’t allowed on the Skellig landing tour and if you’re planning to visit the islands with your young family, you will need to take this into account. The eco tour, however, is suitable for the whole family and everyone can enjoy exploring the Skellig Coast in one of our vessels

Where you’re staying in Ireland

The two tours we offer at Skellig Coast Adventures start at different times. Our landing tour will depart from Portmagee Marina between 8:00 am and 10:00 am depending on the landing slot, so we highly recommend that you stay close to Portmagee the night before your trip. Our eco tour doesn’t depart until between 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm, so you can easily stay further afield. There is plenty of accommodation near Portmagee if you’re interested in the landing tour though, so you won’t struggle to book somewhere for the night.

How much you have to spend on a boat tour

Our Skellig tours are priced differently to reflect what they include and the amount you have to spend on your visit to the Skellig Islands will influence which boat tour your book. Our eco tour is €50.00 per person and we have discounts available for students, children and family groups. Whereas, our landing tour is more expensive at €120.00 per person, yet it does include disembarking the vessel and climbing the famous steps of Skellig Michael.
