Are you interested in visiting the breathtaking Skellig Islands, and have an experience that you will never forget? The Skellig islands are two beautiful islands sitting approximately 13km off of the coast of County Kerry in Ireland. There is Skellig Michael (also known as Great Skellig), and Little Skellig, the smaller of the two islands. You are able to step foot on Skellig Michael and explore everything that this magnificent island has to offer.
The Skellig Islands are very famous in Ireland, but not many people have actually had the chance to step foot on them due to their isolated location. If you would like to explore the stunning Skellig Islands, Skellig Coast Adventures would love to take you there. We provide our Skellig Tours by boat, so you can see the natural beauty and history that the islands have to offer with us.
The History Behind the Skellig Islands
For all the history lovers, the Skellig Islands have a huge amount of amazing history behind them. The Skellig Islands (also once known as the ‘Skellocks’) were formed during the Devonian period, between 300-400 million years ago.
They are very famous for their beauty and the unbelievable historical monastery that sits on Skellig Michael. The sixth-century Christian monastery is perched at 160m (520 ft) above sea level, on a ledge that is close to the top of the lower peak.
Skellig Michael is now designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is an extremely impressive and magnificent site that you can see when you visit the Skellig Islands. Skellig Michael was also the home to the monks of St Fionan, and it is known to be one of the earliest monastic settlements in Ireland.

The Skellig Landing Tour and Skellig Eco Tour
We have two different tours available at Skellig Coast Adventures, our Landing Tour and Eco Tour.
As a part of the landing tour, visitors get to disembark the vessel and climb the famous steps of Skellig Michael. When you step foot on the island, you will be met by the O.P.W (Office of Public Works) and be expertly guided to the top. Our expert tour guide will bring the trip to life for you, and you will be told the history and stories of the Skellig Coast whilst learning all about the wildlife that call the Skellig Coast home. This is the perfect tour for those who wish to explore the wonders that Skellig Michael has to offer by foot, and hike the famous steps yourself.
The Eco Tour does not land on Skellig Michael, but offers a stunning experience of the Skellig Islands and coast from the comfort of your vessel. You will be able to take in the majestic scenery that the Skellig Islands have to offer, and be immersed in the wonder and folklore of the Skellig Coast. You will be able to see an abundance of wildlife creatures including puffins and the second largest colony of Gannets in the world – as well as seals, bottlenose dolphins and occasionally humpback whales. This is the ideal tour for those who want to see the majestic islands and everything that the coast has to offer, without having to hike the steps.
